The Healing Home Approach™ is a trauma-informed model that weaves together research, clinical practice, and lived experience within foster and adoptive care.
Developed by Courtney Snyder Elhardt, MS, MA, LPC a mental health professional with a BA in Psychology, an MS in Child & Adolescent Developmental Psychology, and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, the model reflects more than two decades of work with at-risk youth. Courtney’s early career included serving as a special educator and providing child development support in a children’s home in South Korea, where she collaborated closely with the foster care system.
Courtney is also the adoptive mother of eight children from foster care, including four adopted as teenagers. Her children represent a wide range of psychiatric, developmental, and behavioral needs rooted in profound trauma. Despite these challenges, she and her family have never experienced a placement disruption—either domestically or internationally—offering a rare lens into long-term, trauma-informed caregiving.
As Courtney supported families, caseworkers, clinicians, TFC agencies, law enforcement, and hospital staff, she began receiving consistent requests for training and guidance. Through ongoing conversations with foster, adoptive, and biological parents, as well as therapists, GALs, CASA volunteers, and law enforcement involved in sex-trafficking recovery, the depth of the need for accessible trauma-informed education became increasingly evident.
Drawing on her background in psychology, developmental science, and clinical mental health practice, Courtney created The Healing Home Approach™ to equip caregivers and professionals with practical, compassionate, and evidence-based tools. She provides trainings, workshops, and consultation throughout Virginia with a mission to make trauma-informed care both deeply human and truly actionable. The vision is a caregiving model where understanding and responsibility come together, and connection becomes the foundation for healing.
